Waist–hip ratio

Put a second set of numbers beside this one and see the difference.

Waist-to-height ratio
0.49
Body surface area (m²)
1.91
Lean body mass (kg)
58.1
Ideal body weight (kg)
70.5

Waist 85 cm over hip 100 cm is 0.85; over a height of 175 cm it is 0.49. Body surface area is 1.91 m² and lean body mass about 58.1 kg.

Rough indications, not measures of health. Lean body mass (Boer) and body surface area (Mosteller) are equations fitted to groups of people and give an average, not your own value. Ideal body weight (Devine, 1974) was devised to dose drugs, not as a weight to aim for; it ignores build, age and muscle and is shown only because it is often asked for. Waist measurements say more than weight alone, and a doctor says more than any of them.

Five numbers from four readings: waist divided by hip, waist divided by height, body surface area (Mosteller), lean body mass (Boer) and ideal body weight (Devine). Each has its own formula page with the source: waist–hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, body surface area, lean body mass, men and women, ideal body weight.

Example. A man of 180 cm and 80 kg with a waist of 80 cm and a hip of 100 cm: waist–hip 0.80, body surface area 2.00 m², lean body mass 61.4 kg.

These are rough indications, not measures of health. Ideal body weight was devised to dose drugs, not as a target, and it ignores build, age and muscle. For your own BMI see the BMI calculator.
