How to use it
- Type a number up to 10¹⁵ (one quadrillion). Decimals use a point on this page; spaces group thousands.
- Choose the output language independently of the page: this page is in English, but the words can be Swedish.
- Choose how: a number, an ordinal (first, second, twenty-first), or an amount of money in SEK, NOK, DKK, EUR, USD or GBP.
- The address bar holds your choices, so a link brings the same words back.
English rules
- 21 to 99 take a hyphen: thirty-five.
- British English often puts “and” after hundred: two hundred and thirty-five. American English leaves it out: two hundred thirty-five. A switch picks one.
- The short scale is used: a billion is 10⁹ and a trillion 10¹².
- Decimals are read digit by digit after “point”: 3.14 is three point one four.
Swedish rules
- Numbers below a million are one word: tvåhundratrettiofem (235), tvåtusen (2,000).
- Spaces appear before the million-level words: två miljoner femhundratusen.
- 1 is “ett” when counting and “en” with a common-gender noun: en krona, ett pund.
- Decimals are read after “komma”: 3,14 is tre komma ett fyra.
Amounts of money
The amount is rounded half up to two decimals and the minor unit is left out when it is zero: 250.50 USD is two hundred fifty dollars and fifty cents.
Common questions
Which numbers are too large?
Anything above 10¹⁵. Past that the names (quintillion, sextillion) differ between short and long scale, so the converter stops rather than guess.
